Biotic Contamination and Possible Ways of Sterilization: A Review with Reference to Bamboo Micropropagation. BABT
Ray,Syandan Sinha; Ali,Nasim.
ABSTRACT Multipurpose use of bamboo in rural life makes it as poor man’s timber in Asian countries. Deforestation and industrialization leads to destruction of natural forest. To replenish, a rapid plantation of bamboo could be one of the possible solutions. Bamboo is propagated mainly by vegetative methods though it is not suitable for large scale plantation because of several limitations. Micropropagation is gaining importance for large scale propagation because of its capability in raising huge number of true to type propagules in a limited space in very short span of time. Like any other plant, the chief constraint of bamboo micropropagtion is in vitro contamination arises from several sources including explants. Most of the contaminants are reduced by...

Components of net aerial primary production in a Bambusa oldhamii plantation Agrociencia
Castañeda-Mendoza,Arturo; Vargas-Hernández,J. Jesús; Gómez-Guerrero,Armando.
Biomass production is an important criterion to be considered for the establishment of commercial forestry plantations for bioenergy production. In this study, an estimation of net aerial primary production (NAPP) was made in a young plantation of Bambusa oldhamii Munro from the sum of biomass production from growth of new culms, biomass increment of the pre-existing culms, and production of litter. Biomass production in the incorporated culms was 15.82 Mg ha-1 year-1, of which 13.77 Mg (87 %) corresponded to stems and 2.05 Mg (13 %) to foliage. Biomass increment in the pre-existing culms was 10.88 Mg ha-1. One- and two-year-old cohort production was 7.31 and 3.57 Mg ha-1. Litter production was 5.56 Mg ha-1 year-1. Results show that NAPP was 32.20 Mg ha-1,...

Comportement Mécanique de Composites Renforcés de Lamelles de Bambou, Influence du Vieillissement dans l’Eau de Mer ArchiMer
Davies, Peter; Arhant, Mael; Le Gac, Pierre Yves; Le Gall, Maelenn; Kemlin, Guillaume.
There are more than a thousand species of bamboo and some of these contain large amounts of fibres with attractive properties. However, the extraction of the fibres without damaging them is difficult, requiring energy and special equipment. One solution is to use the bamboo in the form of thin strips taken from fibre-rich regions of the plant, as done by the Cobratex company in an innovative process. These contain the fibres but they are protected from damage and keep their alignment. This paper presents the results from a study of bamboo strips, alone and in an infused composite. The influence of seawater immersion is investigated. The composite weight gain is high, around 25 %, but most of the water is in the natural canals of the wood. The influence of...

Design, Fabrication and Thermal Evaluation of Lemang (Rice Bamboo) Cooking Device Integrated with Continuous Rotating System CIGR Journal
Sagita, Diang; Rahayuningtyas, Ari; Kurniawan, Yose Rizal; Novrinaldi, Novrinaldi.
Lemang is one of the typical Malay food made from white glutinous rice and is cooked inside a bamboo stalk cavity using a direct open fire method. An existing cooking technique is still using manual methods especially for turning the bamboo so it becomes harmful for hand. This research aims to design, fabricate and evaluate a lemang rice cooking device integrated with a continuous rotating system. The methods used in this study were: 1) functional analysis of the design, 2) structural analysis of the design using computer-aided design (CAD), 3) manufacturing a prototype, 4) testing and evaluating the cooking device. Performance evaluation was conducted for observing heat distribution in bamboo and specific energy consumption during the cooking process. The...

Determination of minimal age of five species of Chusquea bamboos through rhizome analysis as a tool to predict the flowering in southern Chile RChHN
TAGLE,LEONARDO; MURÚA,ROBERTO; BRIONES,MIREYA; MONTALBA,RENE; LAMBIN,XAVIER.
Synchronous flowering and subsequent drying up of bamboos of the genus Chusquea are important processes in the dynamics and structure of many forest ecosystems. In southern South America, bamboo flowering and subsequent mast seeding trigger rodent outbreaks associated with zoonotic diseases. Predicting future flowering events requires knowledge of the age of bamboo stands together with species-specific periodicity in flowering. We explored whether it is possible to predict the minimum age in bamboo plants based on the features of their rhizomes. We studied bamboo stands of age known by the local people in 15 sites in the coastal and Andes Mountains as well as in and the Central Valley of southern Chile (37° 48'- 43° 58' S, from 12 to 1047 m.a.s.l.). For...

Losses of forest cover, biodiversity, agricultural productivity, and ecosystem services in the Himalayan mountain region are interlinked problems and threats to the sustainable livelihoods of 115 x 106 mountain people as well as the inhabitants of the adjoining Indo-gangetic plains. Until the 1970s, environmental conservation, food security, and rural economic development were treated as independent sectors. The poor outcomes of sector-oriented approaches catalyzed efforts to address environmental and socioeconomic problems concurrently. The identification of "key" natural resource management interventions is an important dimension of integrated management. Projects to rehabilitate the degraded lands that cover 40% of the Indian Himalaya could be key...

New molecular evidence supports the species status of Kaempfer's Woodpecker (Aves, Picidae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Azevedo,Lorena de Sousa; Aleixo,Alexandre; Santos,Marcos Pérsio Dantas; Sampaio,Iracilda; Schneider,Horacio; Vallinoto,Marcelo; Rêgo,Péricles Sena do.
Kaempfer's Woodpecker (Celeus obrieni) is the only species of the genus Celeus endemic to Brazil. The description of this taxon as a subspecies of the Rufous-headed Woodpecker (Celeus spectabilis) was based on a single specimen. While C. obrieni and C. spectabilis are now considered separate species based on morphological and limited molecular evidence, no study has critically tested the reciprocal monophyly and degree of evolutionary independence between these taxa with several specimens. Herein, fragments of the mitochondrial and nuclear DNA of three recently-collected specimens of C. obrieni were analyzed to evaluate the degree of evolutionary differentiation of this taxon with respect to C. spectabilis. The results confirm the reciprocal monophyly...

Gomes Neto,José A.; Barbosa,Normando P.; Beraldo,Antônio L.; Melo,Aluísio B. de.
ABSTRACT The fabrication of traditional construction materials consumes a large amount of energy, emits pollutants, and utilizes nonrenewable raw materials. Therefore, it is important to reduce the environmental impact of construction through the use of eco-friendly materials, such as bamboo. This work presents the characterization of Bambusa vulgaris, which is widely available in Brazil. The aim is to employ this raw material as a construction material. The geometric and physical properties were obtained. The results showed that, when bamboo is soaked in water, dimensional variations up to 7% were observed along the radial direction. The mechanical properties depend on the moisture content. The compressive strength can exceed 60 MPa with approximately 7%...

Taquara bamboo control as an alternative to recovery of the Araucaria Forest PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Sanquetta, Carlos Roberto.
Native bamboos occur abundantly in forests with predominance of Araucaria angustifolia that werehighly disturbed by anthropogenic causes. The occupation of the competitive space by these plants may indicate that there is a dependency relationship between the establishment of tree seedlings and bamboos in the ecosystem. This study aimed at evaluating the establishment of seedlings of tree species that appeared naturally in an area strongly dominated by bamboos in the understory. An  experiment of mechanical control of bambooswas established in the municipality of General Carneiro, southern Paraná State, with 1.00 hectare, following thecompletely randomized design. The results showed that felling of bamboos may be effective to stimulate theappearance of many...
